hello!

I’m Lauren and I’m so glad you’re here. You’ll find book recs as well as bits and pieces of my every day life.

June Wrap Up

June Wrap Up

It’s hard to believe that I survived a full year of pandemic school and hybrid speech therapy but WE MADE IT. And now my biggest plans for the summer are to lounge by my kiddie pool and read as many books as I can. Also to somehow mentally and physically prepare for a baby (!!!) this september.

I don’t feel like I actually read that much this month (school here went until June 18th) but it turns out the audiobooks I listened to while commuting really contributed to my overall reading this month. I’ve loved using both Libby and LibroFM for my audiobooks and have enjoyed always having something nonfiction on audio going. (You can use BOOKSONHERBRAIN to get two audiobooks for the price of one with LibroFM!)

ONE TO WATCH - My ideal kind of frothy and fun summer read. It was light without being TOO light, the format kept it interesting, and I was rooting for Bea the entire time! This one was definitely worth the wait.

YEARBOOK (AUDIO) - Alright, this one was a little out of my comfort zone since I wasn’t actually a huge Seth Rogen fan to begin with. I thought the first third was funny and the rest was a bit of a slog for me. Not for me but it might be for you.

THE LAZY GENIUS WAY - Easy to read, lots of helpful tips and especially helpful entering a new season of life. I don’t feel like it was anything earth shattering but I appreciated the condensed and easily digestible information. Definitely made me want to think about how I can streamline/batch more things at home.

THE EX TALK - This was another fun summer romance! I LOVED that it was set in the Seattle area and the NPR theme. A little too steamy for me but definitely recommend if you are looking for a fun romance!

THE FEATHER THIEF (AUDIO) - I was absolutely fascinated with this and never knew I could care about fly fishing! priceless birds! And yet….the ending was so anticlimactic that it overall left kind of a bad taste in my mouth. I wanted to love this one and ALMOST did but was pretty disappointed by the ending.

NOMADLAND (AUDIO) - This was a book club pick that I’m not sure I would have picked up otherwise. I saw the movie a few weeks before listening to this and they honestly felt pretty different. I’m not sure if it was just the headspace I was in but I really didn’t care much for the book. I eventually bumped my listening speed up to 2x in order to get through.

DEAR GIRLS (AUDIO) - So my only real reference point for Ali Wong was ALWAYS BE MY MAYBE (which I absolutely adored and you should go watch on Netflix ASAP) and I didn’t have much background for her comedy. I went into this knowing it was going to be crude and a bit much (it was) but the parts where she talked about her miscarriage and how that impacted her - I sobbed in my car on the highway. She’s funny and real and I really appreciated this one (even if it was super gross at times).

Overall, I read seven books this month and (3 physical, 4 audio) and ALL of them were either library books or new to me reads - I didn’t touch a single book from my unread shelf! I read a lot quantity wise but it wasn’t my best in terms of reading enjoyment. I’m hoping to prioritize more backlist books in July and maybe a few from my own shelf.

If you had any standout reads from the month, I’d love to get your recs!
